My new community...It's a beautiful day in this neighborhood

Hey y'all it's been awhile so I thought I would share how I have been feeling lately. I have been calling our new Post Illesheim Germany home now for almost 3 months and I love it here Mr. Roger's had the right Idea...
It's a beautiful day in this neighborhood, A beautiful day for a neighbor, Would you be mine? Could you be mine? It's a neighborly day in this beautywood, A neighborly day for a beauty, Would you be mine? Could you be mine? I have always wanted to have a neighbor just like you, I've always wanted to live in a neighborhood with you.
So let's make the most of this beautiful day, Since we're together, we might as well say, Would you be mine? Could you be mine? Won't you be my neighbor? Won't you please, Won't you please, Please won't you be my neighbor?
When I first got here I was disappointed by my lack of neighbors the lack community. I moved into a practically empty stairwell apartment on a ghost town post thanks to returning soldiers coming back from deployment and new families PCS-ing in our stairwell is finally full. Now some people might think that an empty stairwell is great no noise, no neighbors to worry about disturbing, no kids running over head well I can honestly say that I was uber excited the minute I heard pitter patter little feet wearing a path on the floor above me...even as my husband looks up at the ceiling and says "that is going to get old real fast" I laugh and say "now I know what the neighbors below us hear".
Having neighbors is great it's nice knowing someone else is a stone toss away, that the kids all travel to school in a pack, that we all look out for each other, rides to work or the store for families without a car, getting invited to a baby shower for a soldier getting ready to bring a new baby into the world, watching someones kids so they can get away for a much needed adult only date night and early morning visits from the nice new soldier whose wife and children just arrived and he needs milk because he didn't know that our commissary is closed on Wednesdays.
In this Army life it is up to each of us to create the neighborhood community we want to live in I am choosing to have a good experience and enjoy my new community. If things in your neighborhood are not good work on fixing them there are probably other families who feel the same way as you. When we first arrived here the basement in our building was disgusting after the Army sent in soldiers to remove large oversize items we were left with the filth and small trash to take care of. The building coordinator called a meeting and we all had to go clean up the trash from previous tenants it was dirty and not fun but we worked together and got it done. We have a beautiful Super Playground that some kids like to use as a big trash can including shattering glass beer bottles it's alot cleaner now but it takes a community effort to make sure it stays that way.
At some point we all are the new family on post think about what would of helped you out or what you would of liked someone to do for you and pay it forward to the next new family that comes to your neighborhood, community or your soldiers company there is nothing better then a warm welcome to a new place to make you feel at home. Keep your community clean and welcoming be a good neighbor..
I really like my new community Storck Barracks Illesheim Germany

Army Ten Miler :: 32 days 1 hours 28 Minutes

We are so excited and are running, running, running.
The AWN team is training and making plans for our tent and "presence" at the Army Ten Miler.

I have personally been following George Banker's columns and training plan on Army Wife Network:
http://www.armywifenetwork.com/?p=2795. As he says, we are nearing the home stretch. Last weeks'
assignment was to run 4 times, one of those runs was 8 miles. My husband and I tied up laces and headed out Saturday morning. I never would have believed it if I didn't do it. WOW! What a long run...and that's not even ten miles. But, I know each of us will get there.

Here's a funny: I asked George about buying tennis shoes. "Is it too late?" He laughed; he said, "No, but please no tennis shoes. You're a runner who needs running shoes." I'm still learning.

So, along with the training, we've been pulling out all the stops to make sure people know "who we are!" (Like the cadence...everywhere we go, people want to know, who we are, so we tell them!)

To help with that, we've asked a personal friend of mine, Barbara Shiffler, master quilter, to come up with a Household 6 guidon for us to have posted at our tent. It is coming along nicely. Here are some pictures and a letter from Barb to us. Enjoy-- and get excited. We're running for you, to showcase Army Wives, the Household 6s from California to New York and overseas,  everywhere. Here's the letter, and I promise another update after another Army Wife and I support our Narmy (Navy/Army) families at the Navy 5 miler this Sunday.

Greetings From the Guidon Girl

Hey, y’all!

My name is Barbara Shiffler and I live in Statesboro, Georgia – and I’m making a Guidon for you! Um, I don’t even know how to pronounce it, but I guess that doesn’t matter.

As you may know, Star and I met when we were both Gym Rats here in South Georgia. She remembered that I am a quilter and asked me to help with your banner for the race. I’m glad to do so! Never mind that I have not made anything like this in my life – I know how to work with fabric and I think I can pull this off. Cross your fingers.
She asked me to send some “in progress” pictures so I will send a few. We really don’t have much time, so I may look frantic and/or tired but fear not – we’ll git ‘er done, as a Larry the Cable Guy says.
In case you are interested, I developed a pattern from your cartoon on the internet, sent it to Star and Tara for modifications and am now starting to make it. The first step is to “build” the letters using freezer paper as the template. I iron the seam allowances to the shiny side and the letter looks exactly like it will after it is attached. Cool, huh? In the picture, you don’t see me using scissors, do you? That’s because we use rotary cutters to cut fabric. They are just like pizza cutters but come in smaller sizes. Anyway, I take each letter and sew it by hand to the background and gradually pull the freezer paper out from behind it so that when I’m done the paper is totally gone.
Well, I could get pretty boring about all this – maybe I already have. Anyway, I want you to know I am hard at work for you and hope you will be pleased with the results. Oh – I almost forgot to tell you one more VERY IMPORTANT tool when I’m working in my studio. Music! Today’s selection is Jimmy Buffet’s Greatest Hits. I’m trying to hang onto the summer mood just a bit longer, although I won’t shed too many tears when the highs are no longer in the 90s!

Army Wife Network (AWN) and Family Manager team up again this season for AWN’s 2011 Household 6 (HH6) competition. Since kicking off this past week, the Network has received applications from many Household 6s or Family Managers who have touted themselves as being competent and skilled at being in charge of their Army household. Others interested in competing for the Family Manager University scholarship, special assignments as AWN’s 2011 reigning Household 6, diamond jewelry from USAA’s Membershop, and more gifts chosen to inspire, must visit ArmyWifeNetwork.com and submit the entry form prior to 11:59 PM CST October 4, 2010.

Army Wife Network’s three strongest Household 6 contestants will be interviewed in October on Army Wife Talk Radio, and after some more weeks of online voting, the winner will be announced in November, in conjunction with Military Family Month.

HH6s have been around since Martha Washington, serving their service members and families with distinction, bringing credit upon themselves, their family and the Army Wife Network! HH6 is also the theme of our AWN running team and Hooah Tent with Family Manager at the Army Ten Miler, October 24, 2010. There will be many more faces of HH6 sisters through the years portrayed as this contest and our teammates increase awareness of Army Wives and the roles they’ve played through the years.

You can also catch Army Wife Network supporting their own at their fall Field Exercises™ at Ft. Campbell, Kentucky’s Family Resource Center on October 15 from 5 p.m. until 9 p.m. or October 16 from 10 a.m. until 2 p.m. These special four hour events will be filled with deployment tips and resources, care package ideas, networking, door prizes, and fabulously stuffed resource bags. Registration for this event is required and can be completed online at http://www.armywifenetwork.com/ starting the evening of September 27.

In the event that you can’t compete or can’t attend these AWN events, there are always the empowerment group resources online. Army Wife Talk Radio will host Blue Star Families, Parent Tested Parent Approved and USAA’s Auto Circle spokesperson and author Lauren Fix. New Army Wife Network columnists will include Home Depot, Mr. Dad, TriWest and more on moving, money, and “me” (or the Household 6 in you)! And to bring it to the end zone, Army Wife Network team members touchdown with their very busy, very interactive Army Wife Network Facebook page with membership of over 20,000+ military spouse and family fans cheering each other on. Kids love to plan the box..what do you you send?

Hi,
It has been awhile since I have posted. The grandchildren are working on a box to send to daddy and we have had to discuss the appropriateness of the things they want to send. Ice cream does not travel well, playdough creations...ditto. We try and send a box every once in awhile and this time have come up with tootsie roll pops, beef jerky, artwork, and some school papers. Photos are a good standard of course. What things do the kids in your life like to send to a deployed parent? Any great ideas?

Prayers Please

It's one thing when a soldier dies, but what about when a soldier's spouse dies? A soldier in my husband's unit has a wife with stage 4 liver cancer. I think I've blogged about her earlier this year. All the chemo treatments and stuff stopped working around February and they were trying to do an experimental drug treatment. Over the summer, she went to the Mayo Clinic a few times. At family day a couple weeks ago, he told me that she was dropped from the last trial because it wasn't working and the docs gave her 3-6 months. Just a few days ago, she was taken to hospice by ambulance and she's not eating or drinking anything. He said her body is so swollen that she can't walk or anything. They're now giving her a week and a half at most. It's awful watching this soldier and his family suffer through this. They have 2 small boys - the oldest just being in kindergarten. It's hard enough when a soldier dies, but what about when one of us - another military spouse - is dying? It's just put me in a whole different head set. Please pray for this family!!!!

AWN Newsletter, September 2010

You can sign up on the sidebar for blog updates, show announcements and newsletters right to your inbox. Or for June's newsletter, just click HERE!

Our downloadable newsletters are in a printable format in order that you may distribute--easily--to your spouse clubs, family groups, your chain of command and concern, and others within your Army Wife Network. They are two-sided, single sheets, which offer the best resources, URLs, and articles we gather each month.

They are created and copyrighted by Army Wife Network, but they are YOURS to personalize and circulate.

There are small editable text boxes for you to update your local network on calendar events and contact data. You can brand it with your name as subtext to the Army Wife Network name.

Send the issues home with the service member, post them on unit bulletin boards, email them to your distro list, or post them to your Web site. Tell us the ways you've found best to get the word out. We can share that as a "hot tip" in our next newsletter.

Welcome to September. Did you know that September is recognized by the American Kennel Club (AKC) as National Responsible Dog Ownership Month? Dogs are wonderful companions. They provide an immense amount of security and love to military families who deal with issues related to an absent family member (ask my dog Bob, he was my stand in “hubby” and snuggled in my bed for 12 months while Kevin was away) or a life changing move to a different location (my girls always have a companion). I don’t know about you but in our family our dogs are our children. They go where we go – much like AAFES does with the military (speaking of AAFES and pets, you can check out some pretty awesome pet pictures at their website & even enter your own picture in their pet contest).

There are some wonderful military pet websites out there that are doing great work. Two of my favorites that we’ve interviewed on Army Wife Talk Radio are Guardian Angels for Soldier’s Pets and Patriot Paws. As Army families we also have the services of the US Army Veterinary Corps' available to us. To see if you have a Veterinarian on your post visit your installation’s MWR page on the web. While you are there, see if they have any volunteer positions available to help care for the animals. What a great way to help, and give back to your military pet community.

I also always think it’s interesting to check out all the work our dogs do for us and our Nation by serving alongside our warriors. Check out some amazing stories, information, resources, and adoption information at Military Working Dogs.

For many military families having a dog sometimes means facing challenges when caring from and transporting their pets. If you’re one of those families, don’t despair, there is help available.

The Humane Society of the United States has a wonderful document specifically tailored to our military personnel called “Caring For Your Pet When Called To Duty”. You can download a copy of it here: http://www.hsus.org/web-files/PDF/military_pets.pdf.
If you are facing deployment or needing a temporary or new permanent home for your pet check out some frequently asked questions about deployment and pets here. Two great organizations to help you with care of your pet if you are unable to find a friend or neighbor to assist you are Operation Noble Foster & Military Pets Foster Project. These also are great places to volunteer if you are a family willing to support our soldiers by taking care of their best friend while they are away.

Let’s celebrate our “Man’s Best Friend” this month by becoming more aware, volunteering, and just plain being responsible pet owners ourselves.

Your “Lipstick 6”,
Tara Crooks

PS. For some fun head over to the Dublin Dog store and check out their Military Couture line & then heat up the toaster oven and bake up some homemade dog treats for your military “Fido” – here’s a recipe!

Army Ten Miler :: 50 days 23 hours 31 Minutes

There's some anxiety, excitement and hard work going on over here at the Army Wife Network. We're almost all beginners who are running the ten miler, so I thought I'd share here (on LAS) the slides for beginners and the Army Ten Miler map. As well, I wanted to invite you all to the Hooah Fest and share with you our cadence contest results (for you who may just be coming on board to AWN). This whole process has really just a lot of fun, and we're not done yet...

Everything you really need is available at the Army Ten Miler website. It's very helpful, and George our guest columnist and Operations Manager over there has been helpful as well.

Here is a link to his columns under Health & Fitness at AWN:
http://www.armywifenetwork.com/?page_id=142
His are labeled: Zero to Ten in Six!

Here are links to the two Army Wife Talk Radio shows he's been on:
http://www.blogtalkradio.com/awtr/2010/03/23/awtr-show-258-teaching-character-to-our-children.mp3

http://www.blogtalkradio.com/awtr/2010/08/31/awtr-show-280-army-ten-miler.mp3

Just being new to the area, I'm excited about all the wonderful historic places we'll be running by.
Check out the map!

Sites like: Jefferson Memorial, Korean War Memorial, Pentagon, Washington Monument,
Arlington Memorial Bridge and more!

The beginners guide talks about the schedule: Friday, Saturday, and Sunday, the Expo, packet pick-up, NO-NOs, a checklist and even next years Save the Date info for ATM 2011 (October 9, 2011).

And when we're no longer beginners, we've finished and deserve a great big HOOAH, Army Wife Network will be there. Plans are ongoing for our Household 6 themed tent where you'll meet our team's Household 6, Janet McIntosh, and other AWN members at the Hooah Fest/Finish Festival. Everyone is invited!

Last but not least, I want to be sure to pass on that this is a family friendly affair. There will be plenty for the kids to do. They can even get involved right now with the "Name the Cheetah" contest. The prize is college $$ "in the form of a qualified 529 college savings plan provided by Health Net Federal Services,". (The Name the Cheetah Mascot Contest is open to all kids between the ages of 4-14 of Active Duty Army, National Guard, and Army Reserve parents/legal guardians.)

That's it in a nutshell for all you newbies, like us, out there. Tell us :: are you going? Are you running? What unit are you representing? Have any advice? Where are you at in your training? We'd love to hear your story.

More to follow....in the next 50 days, 23 hours, and 31 minutes.

(the Onion) Report: Mom Just Locked Her Door

This cracked me up in the middle of a pretty bad day this week.
Remember, YOU ARE NOT ALONE and YOU HAVE PERMISSION....here's your permission slip even!

ROANOKE, VA—According to reports from stunned Melberg family sources, Mom just walked up the stairs, slammed the door to her bedroom, and locked it.

The shocking incident occurred shortly before dinner time in the Melberg home at 46 Fairmoor St. Although Mom had reportedly been silently chopping vegetables in the kitchen, showing no signs of outward agitation or anger, multiple sources confirmed seeing her walk briskly through the living room and up the stairs before locking herself in her bedroom at approximately 6:38 p.m.

"Is Mom mad?" Tyler, 8, asked following the unprecedented incident. "You guys, I think Mom's mad."

"It wasn't me," Katie, 11, told reporters. "I was just sitting here. I didn't do anything."

Mom, 46, has not emerged from behind the locked door, nor has she given any indication as to when or if she will return to the kitchen to resume making dinner, sources said.

Speculation persists as to what could have provoked Mom's tense exit, with some citing the failure of Tyler to pick up his toys from the staircase, and others placing the blame on Katie and Joseph's repeated failure to set the table as requested, or on Dad failing to put his book down and help out for once.

Katie, who reiterated that she wasn't ignoring Mom and was going to do her homework in a little while after she was done talking to her friend Amanda, claimed multiple other factors played a role in the episode.

"Joseph was the one who wouldn't get off the computer to come down for dinner," she said. "And then Tyler was making gun sounds and being annoying like always."

"Quiet, you guys," Tyler interjected. "She's going to get madder."

Inquiries are currently being made into whether or not it would be okay to turn the television on, though many at the scene believed that the sound of the family guiltlessly enjoying a TV show could actually exacerbate an already tense situation.

The Melbergs were also reportedly unsure of what to do about the three pots on the stove and the partially chopped carrots, until Dad eventually decided to leave them there for the time being, while turning off all the burners.

"I wish she'd just come out and yell at us," Joseph Melberg, 10, told reporters.

The family's collective hopes were briefly raised when Mom was heard opening her bedroom door at approximately 6:45 p.m. to use the bathroom, where she ran the water for half a minute before turning off the light, pacing down the hall, slamming her door, and locking it again.

Speculation continued to mount that the evening's developments might somehow affect the status of dessert, or possibly even this weekend's planned trip to the beach. However, Tyler, Joseph, and Katie Melberg were reassured by Dad that the situation would soon blow over.

"She'll be fine," Dad said while picking up a dustpan, sweeping up several crumbs, and then awkwardly standing in the kitchen. "She just needs some time alone."

At press time, Dad thought maybe they should all go out for some ice cream or something.
