Looking Back to Move Forward

There are times when it is helpful to look back. Particularly when you are going through a deployment, no matter where you are in the process, it can be helpful to stop and take stock of what you have accomplished.

Our deployment is coming to an end, not close enough to start shaving my legs regularly, but close. I was feeling really low last week, struggling to get through my week. This morning I had to stop myself, stop the negative thoughts and look back at what I have done over the past eleven months.

When the deployment first started I was not looking forward to annual flu shots. I even timed the visit to the clinic with one of my Mom's visits so I wouldn't have to wrestle four children alone. I was terrified and feeling alone. I remember thinking that I would never survive the deployment alone with four children. Several months later when the H1N1 vaccine became available, on a whim one afternoon we went to the clinic and all five of us got the shot. In a couple of months I'd gone from shaking in my boots to striding into the clinic without a thought.

Deployments are so tough and sometimes it is tough to step back and take stock of how far you have come. Making it a day, then a week, or a month is amazing and it is about the small steps. Small steps add up and it is important to focus on the little things and the little goals. Time will pass, as tough as it is, the year will pass as well.

Take a minute today to look at where you started and where you are today. Be proud of the little steps, big goals are accomplished one day at a time through small steps. Sometimes it helps to look back so you can move forward.

You are HERE!

Shall I introduce myself? It feels as if it's been ages.
And yet it feels as if time has flown.

We are HERE!
The Hendersons have relocated to Virginia...it's the state for Lovers you know?
(Remind me: I have to scan in and share a picture for you all. It's a picture of my twin
sister and I (about 4 years old) in "Virginia is for Lovers" t-shirts. Little did we know I would
be a NOVA (Northern VA) resident in my adult years.)

But yes, like I said, we are HERE!

I won't scare you with the details of my PCS. Except to say that if you don't know about:

MOVE.MIL and the assorted DPS web sites,
Military Homefront's Plan my move,
AHRN.com,
AAFES' Exchange Home Services, and Mobile Services Center,
USAA's Movers Advantage and now HomeCircle.com,
and of course MilitaryAvenue.com and MilitaryByOwner.com

you should check them out BEFORE YOU MOVE. They helped us out a lot, once I caught on.

Let me know if a normal google search doesn't get you to the sites above. I'll send you the link.

Here's a link for you right now though: http://awtr.blogspot.com/2009_08_01_archive.html.
If you're new to your area, i.e. you just PCS'd, let's concentrate on the next step, blooming!

Plant Seeds, Add Water, and Sprout! That's what we've done the past few weeks.

Upon recommendation from Joanna at AttaGirlGifts.com who used to live here, but is now in CA, we checked the block on her "must-see". We went to see the Arlington Cemetary (not the whole thing), but the
Marine Silent Drill Platoon in their last summer performance. This was an amazingly coordinated drill ceremony. For just a sec I was "LovingAMarine".  Here's video.

video

And of course, when you're in a cool new town, your friends and family just have to come see it (er-I mean you and your family).  LOL So we have had our guests pop in already. My friend is here this weekend and we did a great overview tour on bikes. It was soooooo fun, especially with my daughter attached to my bike in a tandem bike. She loved it. I'm going to close with a couple pictures from that bike tour.

I promise I won't be a stranger quite so long next time. Enjoy the pictures, enjoy your new home, and enjoy your coming fall.

This road We Travel...

Sometimes I feel like people's first instinct upon learning I am an Army Wife is to feel sorry for me. I don't understand it, but it is true. I guess I probably felt this way at one point also; long ago, before I joined these ranks. Tonight, I want to describe to you this road I (we) travel.

I have moved 12 times in the past 8 years… 12 times. I'm not joking either. Here goes… Allana and I left Florida in July of 2002 and moved to Keesler Air Force Base in Biloxi, Mississippi. We stayed at Keesler until the end of October. From Mississippi, we moved to Davis-Monthan Air Force Base in Tucson, Arizona. After a ton of debate, I thought it would be better to finish some schooling in Florida, and in May of 2004 I packed the two kiddos up and moved home-for 4 months. In August we moved back and into a new house on post in Tucson. It was here that Eric and I made the greatest military friends we could have ever asked for, Melissa and Chris! In April of 2005, Eric was getting ready to go to Army OCS, so the Air Force moved us back home to Florida while he went through some training. September 29th 2005 took us to Fort Bliss in El Paso Texas…. Get ready folks. We got a house on post at Bliss immediately, stayed there for 1 year before we were moved into new quarters. We lived in the new house for a year and then thought it would be better to move home while Eric toured Korea. After 4 months at home, in which I realized that everyone's life was basically too non-military for me, I moved back to El Paso. I was lucky enough to move into the house that connected to my old backyard, and also to my great friends Kristi and John! The great thing about Bliss was that, even with all of the moves, Kristi, Kristin and I were always within one house of one another! At the time, we did not realize the blessing of that; we all do now. Eric was gone until May of 2009, and as soon as he returned, we were packing up to head to Fort Sill. After a six month school, the moving truck came once again, and packed us off to Fort Stewart. I have always been lucky enough to move directly into on post housing (except in Tampa…), and at Stewart I moved into a 3 bedroom while I waited for a four bedroom. We moved here in December of 2009, and by May, 2010, I was in my new and, hopefully last home on Stewart. Go on, I know you want to count them up…. It's 12 (TWELVE) moves, I promise. Note though that most of our moves are during summer. I know that if it is a mistake to move, I always have time to get the kiddos back into the routines they left (which often times we did). Think of it as a vacation of sorts….. just crazy Nikki style.

My point to all of the rambling, though, is because I want you all to know that this road I have traveled is awesome. On this road, I meet the most amazing people. We are all so different, but the main bond that we all have is that we do this life together. In how many arenas in life will you move to a new place, and know; just know, that there will be someone to greet you with open arms when you get there. I can pretty much guarantee that from here on out, anywhere I go there will be someone I know. And, by know, I don't just mean know…. I mean someone whose shoulder has supported many of my tears, or whom has cried on mine… someone who has made me a meal when I had a baby; or whom I have cooked one for. Gals I have volunteered many an hour with! Yes, we military wives do volunteer work you could not begin to even compete with! Believe me you couldn't. Ready for the volunteer acronyms? FRG, PTA, PWOC, ACS, AFTB, AFAP, USO, FSOSC, FSPSC, FBOCSA, MSEC and MCC… to name a few. And, yes, I have volunteered some time with each of these groups, as have many others I know. Ask my friends how many times I have gotten them to "help me out" with something that I volunteered to do. Not one of them has EVER complained- well, not to me anyway. It's not only the sad times when we are there to support one another… you know those homecoming photos many of you non-military people find so fascinating? Those are generally taken by one of these awesome individuals. Many times, they go to welcome a friends spouse home when theirs is still away… just to take the pictures. Now, that's a true friend. When I am having a bad day, or even a good day for that matter, I hang a mini-flag out front that says "Happy Hour", and these friends come and hang out. They even bring food and drink along.

The down side to this road we travel is that we very frequently say "goodbye". For all the times we meet someone new, we add a face to say goodbye to. It's beyond difficult, and at the time, it honestly feels like the end of the world. Soon after that moving truck unloads our shipment at our new location, though, there is new; usually friendly face to say hello to. You think it's hard to form an attachment in the civilian world- you have no idea. The point to my story is this… This is the road I CHOSE to travel. Don't feel sorry for me. It is an HONOR to live this life as I do. Thank you for paying my hubby's salary my dearest civilian tax payer friends (oh, we pay taxes too, so technically, we contribute to our own salary…). I love that I have been given the opportunity to travel, see new places, and meet new and awesome people. And don't forget the best part, the man who walks through my door wears a smokin' hot uniform. This IS the road we travel…

Our dog is TOO smart for his own good

We have a dog named Harry. Harry is an Australian Cattle Dog (aka Blue Heeler). He's insanely smart - so much so that it gets him into trouble. For instance, my husband and I went to the store one night to do some minimal grocery shopping or something like that. We came home and Harry was asleep on his back on the couch (which he is not allowed on the furniture), but the kicker is that he brought in a bag of potato chips and ever so carefully removed the chip clip off the bag and helped himself to some chips - and didn't make a mess. To make it even more interesting, he did this while watching tv on the couch, becuase we try to leave the tv on for him while we're not home. Another night, we came home, and Harry had brought into the living room, a bag of unopened tortilla chips. He ever so carefully tore open the corner of the bag and helped himself once again. He LOVES McDonald's cookies, and we have a bag for him in the car, for when he goes for car rides. We ran into Kroger to get 1 thing the other day, and came out - the cookies were in the middle of the driver seat. It appeared untouched beyond that, until I noticed the bag was wet when I went to put them away. No mess - at all! The kicker is tonight. My husband and I had gone to hear some local candidates speak. On the way home, I remarked to my husband that I had gotten a pretzel at the Target snack shop earlier and forgot to put it away in a baggie before we left. We get home, and Harry had gotten it off the counter. The funny part is that he scratched at the back door to go outside, so my husband let him out. He noticed that Harry had something in his mouth, so he asked Harry - what do you have? Harry ran away - like he does when he has something he's not supposed to. My husband caught up with him, and Harry had the rest of the pretzel in his mouth. He wanted to go outside to finish eating the pretzel without us knowing - like a kid sneaking candy. Seriously?! I didn't know dogs could be that stinking smart, but this one is. He kills me - but I love him.

No Words

Hello, it has been a long time since I have written a post. Our son was home this summer on an extended leave. We so enjoyed having him here, and I saw so many things that all military families experience. I wanted to write about it, but somehow the depth of it has kept me with no words.

I am in a place where sharing seems to be a breech of confidentiality and personal family emotion, and so, I don't know what the next step would be. I think that Military life is such a mix of the joys and sorrows, that maybe all I can say, is that I love our country, our serving families and my son.

Thank you to all of you who know what I am saying with no words. Thank you to all of you who love a soldier.

Commissary Fall Case Lot Sales

By Cherie Huntington, DeCA public affairs specialist
FORT LEE, Va. - Whether you're packing your pantry for school-day meals and munchies, or just staying "hurricane ready" until the official season ends Nov. 30, the Defense Commissary Agency's worldwide case lot sale in September can help you do so with savings of up to 50 percent or more.

"Fall often brings lots of big expenses for back-to-school youth as well as adults returning to college classes," said DeCA Acting Director and CEO Thomas E. Milks. "The September case lot sale can help trim your grocery budget so you'll have more to spend on school-related purchases."

There are 330 items available for the sale this year and store staffs decide which items they will feature in their sales. They also supplement these items with local direct-store-delivery items such as soda, chips and baked goods, said Charlie Dowlen, DeCA promotions manager. Selections range from canned goods, beverages, paper products, cleaning and laundry products, and pet supplies to produce, fresh meat and seafood, and bakery products. Club pack items are also used extensively in this sale and include plenty of items that fit the bill for back-to-school eating "on the go," as well as products useful for hurricane and tornado preparedness: food and beverages that don't require refrigeration, flashlights, lanterns and emergency candles.
"Case lot sales provide a great opportunity to stock up at savings beyond our normal 30 percent or more," said Dowlen. "More than half of the items are sold in 'club pack' product packages similar to the oversized packages or multiple products bundled together that are found at commercial warehouse club outlets."

DeCA's worldwide case lot sales mainly take place in May and September of each year. Dowlen said this year's May event broke previous sales records, showing that savvy commissary shoppers take full advantage of the unbeatable savings offered at case lot sales.
Most commissaries participate but schedule their case lot sales on different weekends throughout September. However, some store sales dates can occur as early as August and as late as October. For example, the Marine Corps Air Station Miramar Commissary, Calif., will hold its case lot event Aug. 19-22, while the Baumholder Commissary, Germany, will conduct its sale Oct. 2-3. So check the schedule for your local store's sale dates by going to the special case lot sale Web page at: http://www.commissaries.com/case_lot_sale.cfm.

Customers who live in regions with multiple commissaries can use the DeCA website, http://www.commissaries.com, for information on all sales in their area.

Thank You, USO!

Dear USO,
Thank you so very much for sponsoring the Sesame Street Live performance that has been traveling from instillation to instillation putting on shows for all of us military families to enjoy!! On Tuesday, Mommy, Daddy and I had the privilege of attending the evening performance here at Fort Carson and we had a GREAT time!!!!

We were barely in the door of the Special Events Center and I was already having a great time. Those spinning, light-up Elmo toys y'all handed out are AWESOME! I love mine so much I've been sleeping with it right next to my bed (and sometimes I even play with it while I am *supposed* to be sleeping...but shhh! please don't tell Mommy!!)

Once the show got started, the fun continued! It was so fun to see Elmo, Grover, Zoe, Rosita and Cookie Monster up close!! I had no idea they were such talented singers and dancers!!

As a military family, we are so thankful for all of the hard work you do to show your support of the troops and their families. From the USO centers in airports to amazing shows and performances like Sesame Street, THANK YOU for ALL that you do! USO, you're the best!!!

Thanks Again!

The end of summer

I can't believe it's August already. Where did summer go? However, August is a busy month with the end of summer fun.

First of all, in my family, we have a TON of August birthdays. My mom's, mine, my dad's, my sister-in-law, and 2 nieces (one of which has the same birthday as me). Then, there's all kinds of celebrations going on such as Festivals, carnivals, 5K and 10K races, etc. DH and I just returned from a short trip back home to PA for my 10 year high school reunion. In addition to that, we also celebrated my mom and dad's birthdays while we were there. Aside from the road construction traffic, it was a nice and uneventful trip.

DH had just returned from his Annual Training less than a week before we went on our little excursion and it was SOOOOOOOOOOOO nice to be stuck with him in a car for a 9 hour car ride. Harry, our Blue Heeler doggie, wasn't happy that we had to leave him at the Kennell - although he played with other doggies all day while he was there.

We went home for my high school class reunion, but this next week is our family reunion. Well, maybe next year. In addition to that, we just have so much going on.

School starts soon for the kiddos. I'm a substitute teacher, so school also starts soon for me. I'm still looking for a full time teaching job, so say some prayers please. While getting ready for all of this, I'm also still getting ready for the Army Ten Miler. I'm now up to running 5 miles a day. I'm trying to do this every other day. My goal is to be able to run 10 miles before the Ten Miler. While doing all that, DH and I are also trying to get together our travel plans for the ATM.

It's the end of summer and I've only been to the pool a couple times, but maybe I'll take some time to spend there with a book for a time out.
