"When Parents Are Deployed"

Premiering December 27th, 2006 on PBS.

Host, Cuba Gooding Jr., with the Corporation for Public Broadcasting (CPB) brings true life stories of military families enduring the hardship of separation to Public Television. True to what AWTR has always said, these families are full of pride and endure their lifestyles by coping using humor, camaraderie, and selfless giving. The stories were brought to the attention of WalMart, CPB and Sesame Workshop during the making of talk, listen, connect: Helping Families During Military Deployment. Talk, listen, connect will be the focus of the January Newlsetter's "Review For You."

This half hour special will not be aired in the Georgia area on December 27th, so help us out. Tune in, and leave your review here for us and others that won't be able to do the same.

Our month has been chaotic-- as I'm sure yours was. If you were meaning to participate in the Decoration Rumble, be sure to post pictures of your holiday feast, festivities, friends, and fiascos in the next couple days.

Here's one of the Hendersons at Operation Christmas (also supported by WalMart (and Operation Homefront)). Our military families are so blessed that so many are concerned for our welfare. I hope you'll visit their sites and support their patriotic endeavors.

In the spirit of holiday fun...

Welcome to the 2006 Holiday Edition of Getting to Know Your Friends!

YOU KNOW THE DRILL: Highlight, copy, and paste (not forward)
and change my answers to your answers. Be sure to send back to me. Enjoy!!
Everyone has time for a few moments of fun!

DONT BE A SCROOGE
YOUR NAME HERE: Tara

1. Egg Nog or Hot Chocolate? Hot Chocolate

2. Does Santa wrap presents or just sit them under the tree? Santa doesn’t have time to wrap, and the elves are all tired from making all the presents. So they just bring them and leave them out in a ‘display” around the tree. That is how you know it’s from Santa and not from Mom or Dad.

3. Colored lights on tree/house or white? White inside on the tree, and colored outside on the house.

4. Do you hang mistletoe? Yes!

5. When do you put your decorations up? After Thanksgiving (but sometimes I do it the week of Thanksgiving)

6. What is your favorite holiday dish (excluding dessert)? Ok excluding cookies? Then it would have to be breakfast casserole that my grandma made every Christmas morning, not because I liked but because she made it and you could always count on it. That is how we knew it was Christmas! 

7. Favorite Holiday memory as a child: Pajamas on Christmas Eve. The Christmas Eve “program” where we all sang carols (we made up stuff to the 12 days of Christmas) and read “Twas’ The Night Before Christmas”. Oh…and waking up to my Uncle Thom’s laughter on Christmas morning at my grandma and grandpa’s house. It was always the best. We saw Santa gifts, opened presents, and then we had breakfast. When it was all done we got to open our stockings. I miss those days more than anyone will ever know. My grandma had the most magical Christmas time and I loved it so much. She knows, and she inspires me without even being here to do the same for Wrena today.

8. When and how did you learn the truth about Santa? What truth about Santa? I don’t know what you’re talking about.

9. Do you open a gift on Christmas Eve? Yes! We open our new jammies.

10. How do you decorate your Christmas tree? My tree matches our house, it’s full of primitive Americana snowmen.

11. Snow! Love it or Dread it? Dread it, but miss it. We don’t have it here in GA, but we do in MO. I guess I don’t mind as long as I don’t have to go anywhere.

12. Can you ice skate? Never tried.

13. Do you remember your favorite gift? When I was younger it was the Toni Basil 45 record with a new stereo to play it on. Then as a teen it was a emerald ring from my then boyfriend, now husband, Kevin.

14. What's the most important thing about the Holidays for you? Family.

15. What is your favorite Holiday Dessert? Russian Teacakes is a great one! I really love Christmas cookies.

16. What is your favorite holiday tradition? See question 7.

17. What tops your tree? A rusty star.

18. Which do you prefer giving or Receiving? Giving, definitely. Not just to be PC, but I truly LOVE to give gifts. When there is one that I really am excited about it makes my day to give it!!

19. What is your favorite Christmas Song? Carol of the bells.

20. Candy Canes? They’re ok – but a “Bobs” candy cane is AWESOME!!!

Decoration Rumble

Merry Christmas Friends and Family.

I just wanted to take a quick minute and call your attention to the Decoration Rumble piece that was in our newsletter. Let's try and have some fun with this. Here's how it works.

Send us pictures of your house, post them as comments here, or send us the link to view your holiday decorating savvy. We'll choose the best one or two and put them in our New Year newsletter. We might even have something left over from Santa's gift bag to send your way.
Here's the link to Mrs. Bush's White House: http://www.whitehouse.gov/holiday/2006/ for ideas. You can share pictures of inside, outside, your favorite holiday card, and/or the following information...

Christmas Balls _______, Garland by ft. _______
How many cards did you write? _______
Type & No. of cookies _______
Menu items ___________________________
______________________________________
No. of guests _______

Don't think of this as one more thing to put on your busy to-do list. Just think that you'll be sharing your handiwork with a lot more people, spreading more joy, and making your efforts even more worth it. So, send them in. We'd love to see what you're up to.
