K12 Supports Army Wife Network
What does one wear to the Army Wife Network’s Spouse Field Exercise, I thought, as I agreed to attend on behalf of K12- the leader in online learning for grades K – 12? This past May, my daughters and I had the distinct privilege to attend and no, we didn’t pack our jogging suits! We did, however, meet a group of amazing women who we are proud to call friends. I can’t think of a better way to honor our military than to provide a night of gratitude and fun. My daughter, Ashley, has this to say about the event and I couldn’t agree more: It was great going to the Army Wives Networking convention. These women struggle everyday with the troubling thoughts of transferring to different bases, making new friends, enrolling their children into new schools. We were able to represent K12 -- a curriculum that could possibly change their lives and the lives of their children.
I hope the winners of our drawings are enjoying their “spa in a basket” and I personally look forward to next year’s event! With a heart full of gratitude for your sacrifice to make our world a safer place to live.
God bless you, Sheri

I wouldn't have it any other way!
The Army holds a special piece of my heart. I guess it always has. When I was 5 years old, my daddy took me to an air show where I saw the Army's parachute team, The Golden Knights, perform. I looked at my daddy and said "I wanna be in the Army when I grow up". And Join the Army, I did. I knew BCT would be hard, I was prepared for that. What I wasn't prepared for was the 'relationship BCT' that I would go through after I met my husband!
After being in the same Brigade for nearly 4 years, he and I finally connected. Both of us had been on the same installation for the duration of out careers, with the exception of our respective combat tours. It seems like that all changed when we had our first date, and one date was all it took, we were both hopeless! I was a newly promoted E-5, he was a newly promoted E-7. We basically had 2 months together before the Army sent him to ANCOC for nearly 3 months. While he was away in training, our prayers were answered and he was accepted to Warrant Officer Candidate School. 2 months home, and he was back in training. When he graduated from his Candidate Course, he had 2 months home and it was back to school for Basic course. 3 months this time! It was easy at times to get tough on the Army, but I had to keep reminding myself that "at least you know he's safe, he's not in a combat zone, and he's coming home... Other wives aren't so lucky!" Deep down I knew he was realizing his lifelong dream, and I was blessed to be able to be by his side and support him every step of the way.
During ANCOC, I sent him an E-card every day, I never missed. I even drove 14 hours straight one four day weekend he wasn't allowed to have a mileage pass, with his dog and my 2 children to surprise him. I pulled in the parking lot about midnight, and realizing that the CQ couldn't let me enter the building to go knock on his door, I had to do the only thing I could think of and set off the alarm on his Jeep. I'll never forget the look on his face when he saw the four of us standing there! I've never missed a graduation of his, and consequently, he was able to concentrate on his studies and not worry about the home front!
We got married in May after discovering the Army's "Put up or shut up" policy on newly transitioned officers dating enlisted service members. We had one year from the date I pinned his warrant officer rank on his dress blues to either get married or cut all social ties. No pressure though :) We got married knowing he would deploy in the fall. He actually knew before he graduated from WOBC that he was headed to the white sandy beaches again. It's getting closer now, it seems like our lives are moving at rocket speed. Every day brings something deployment related to our table. Time lines, RFI, packing, POA's. Whew. I feel blessed that I've been deployed before, and I know all the work that goes into it! I would be completely lost! But at the same time, just like all brand new Army wives, I'm trying to get involved in the FRG as much as possible, and most importantly... We treat each and every day together as if he deploys tomorrow!!! One day not too far from now, I will hug him and watch him get on that bus one day, and I will cry just like all the other wives, but I know we won't have any regrets. That's a non-negotiable for us!
I hope you enjoyed getting to know me, and I look forward to getting to know all of you, too! We're a special brand of women, ladies! Until next time, HH6 out!

You belong to me.

Hello ladies! Hope everyone is doing well. We've been busy preparing for this deployment. I can't believe we'll have to say goodbye to daddy in just a few days. I don't think the kids really understand what's going on. I don't know that I can actually type out what I feel right now. I'm exhausted emotionally and don't know how on earth I'm going to make it through this thing. I know that we'll make it through, it's what we do. Anyways I wanted to share this song with you. I heard it the other day and wanted to share.

I Am An Army Wife
I Am An Army Wife
Author Unknown
I am an Army wife - a member of that sisterhood of women who have had the courage to watch their men go into battle, and the strength to survive until their return. Our sorority knows no rank, for we earn our membership with a marriage license, travelling over miles, or over nations to begin a new life with our soldier husbands. Within days, we turn a barren, echoing building into a home, and though our quarters are inevitably white-walled and unpapered, we decorate with the treasures of our travels, for we shop the markets of the globe.
Using hammer and nail, we tack our pictures to the wall, and our roots to the floor as firmly as if we had lived there for a lifetime. We hold a family together by the bootstraps, and raise the best of 'brats', instilling in them the motto: "Home is togetherness", whether motel, or guest house, apartment or duplex. As Army wives we soon realize that the only good in "Good-bye" is the "Hello again". For as salesmen for freedom, our husbands are often on the road, leaving us behind for a week, a month, an assignment.
During separations we guard the home front, existing until the homecoming. Unlike our civilian counterparts, we measure time, not by age, but by tours. We plant trees, and never see them grow tall, work on projects completed long after our departure, and enhance our community for the betterment of those who come after us.
We leave a part of ourselves at every stop. Through experience, we have learned to pack a suitcase, a car or hold baggage, and live indefinitely from the contents within: and though our fingers are sore from the patches we have sewn, and the silver we have shined, our hands are always ready to help those around us. Women of peace, we pray for a world in harmony, for the flag that leads our men into battle, will also blanket them in death.
Yet we are an optimistic group, thinking of the good, and forgetting the bad, cherishing yesterday, while anticipating tomorrow. Never rich by monetary standards, our hearts are overflowing with a wealth of experiences common only to those united by the special tradition of military life. We pass on this legacy to every Army bride, welcoming her with outstretched arms, with love and friendship, from one sister to another, sharing in the bounty of our unique, fulfilling Army way of life.

Staycations
With max leave right around the corner, our family has been thinking about places to go and things to do during those two weeks. Daddy's parents are coming to visit (HURRAY!!!!) for part of the time, so we won't be going on a far-away vacation. Instead, we've been exploring the idea of a "stay-cation" a vacation where you stay at home (or near your home) and look at your hometown the way a tourist would. Staycations are more popular than ever right now. With the economy the way it is, people have less time and money to spend taking more traditional vacations. For military families, staycations are a great way to really explore the area surrounding your duty station. Although some duty stations are in less than desirable locations, most Post's have great things to see and do within a days drive!
Being that we're relatively new to the area, there are a TON of places for us to explore. Right now, we are tentatively planning on being "tourists" in Denver for a few days. There are museums, zoos, even a Mint where they make money! If the weather's nice, we're hoping for a day at the water park!!
If you were a tourist in YOUR town, where would you go? What things would you see? It might take a little research but there's probably great places to visit right around the corner!!

The Greatest Show on Earth!
Last week, the Ringling Brothers and Barnum & Bailey Circus came to Colorado Springs. Although we didn't go to the circus itself, we did get to see the elephants and some of the horses! See, when the circus comes to town, if the rail yard at Ft. Carson is available, the circus drives their train to the Fort Carson rail yard. Once the train is there, they offload some of their larger animals (like the elephants) at the rail yard and then walk them to the area where the circus was being held.
It was a pretty unique experience and one that goes to show, you just never know what you're going to see on an Army Post!!!

CONTEST WINNER-- What has daddy done for you lately?
WINNER: Jess submitted this to recognize her husband Rich who is currently a Drill Sergeant with the Army. We hope he enjoys his prize pack!
Gargoyle’s eyewear, WireACake, Saxx Men’s Underwear
There were some really great entries. Our team especially liked jenzimmer, froggyg2gla, and sarajean81 for runners up! Read them all on our message boards here.
When my son Jacob was only 2 years old, my husband (Rich) walked into our lives and within weeks, we knew he was the missing piece to our little puzzle. After we had dated for a while, Rich sat Jacob and me down, and proposed marriage to us both. He then told Jacob he never had to worry again, because forever more, Jacob would have a Daddy in his life to love and cherish him. And that's always stayed true.
Now after 9 years of marriage, and 2 more kids to complete our home, Rich is still just as loving as amazing as ever. He adopted Jacob, gave him our last name, and proudly proclaims him 'his firstborn son'. When I was pregnant with our second child, Rich was on his first deployment in support of Operation Enduring Freedom. Nevertheless, Rich found a way through the aggravating phone lines and despite the horrible connection, to call as often as he could so our baby would know his voice by time his Daddy came home.
Rich was blessed enough to be home through most of my pregnancy and the birth of our third child, Kaydence. The day she was born, I remember looking into his eyes as he first set sight on his daughter. He was standing beside me, holding my hand and crying tears of joy and pride as he fell in love with our Princess. And almost 4 years later, the look of joy and pride when he looks at each of our children remains permanently planted on his face.
Rich didn't have to step in to a ready-made family, most guys would run away from such a tremendous responsibility. And after 3 kids and 9 years of marriage, 3 deployments and 3 duty stations, his love still shines through everything he does. I don't say he's an amazing dad because I'm biased, I say it because it is true. My husband has a heart of gold, and his children and his family are his top priority at all times. He is an amazing man, and we are all so very lucky and blessed that God sent him to us.

Welcome to June. It’s summer time! S'mores, campfire songs, pillow fights - ah, the sweet memories of summer camp. Or perhaps you’re a beach bum (or a pool bum for this Oklahoma transplant)?
We military spouses are downright creative when it comes to keeping busy! We asked our facebook fans (www.facebook.com/armywifenetwork) what their favorite summer activities were. Answers ranged from camping, evening walks, heading to the beach, splash parks, and BBQs to wake-boarding!
That inspired us to list some of our favorite summer activities. Before your family has a chance to say, “Mom, I’m boooored!” you can be ready with this list of great ideas.
• Grab a family fitness class
• Visit the splash park or pool
• Go on a scavenger hunt (even a virtual one is fun!)
• Read a book

Federal workers aid suspect charities - Giving- msnbc.com
Federal workers aid suspect charities - Giving- msnbc.com
Excerpt:
Even federal workers can be misled by the CFC designation.
“Soldiers assume that a charity is a good one, simply by virtue of its being on the CFC list,” said Starlett Henderson, who co-founded a radio show and website for military spouses. Two years ago, she grew concerned about the large number of new veterans’ charities popping up, and invited watchdog group Charity Navigator to come on the show. Sandra Miniutti, Charity Navigator’s vice president of marketing, told her that the watchdog gave a third of the CFC charities it evaluated low rankings.
"One of three groups being poorly rated charities is a bad lot if you ask me,” Henderson said. Last year, the CFC-listed charities fared slightly better with Charity Navigator: 212 of the 854 organizations — or just over 25 percent — ranked by the watchdog received low ratings. Charity Navigator, which rates about 5,000 of an estimated 400,000 active U.S. charities, didn’t have records for the rest of the 2,352 national and international groups in the CFC last year, including the Coalition to Salute America’s Heroes. It gave Help Hospitalized Veterans its lowest rating, “exceptionally poor.”
“We look at the financial health of charities, including how the charity spends its money and the sustainability of the organization,” Miniutti said. Help Hospitalized Veterans received a low rating on both counts, she said.
Pentagon's list includes a rating
Henderson recommends that military donors check charities against the “America Supports You” list created by the Department of Defense. Although DOD does not investigate charities, it requires charities on the list to be rated by at least one watchdog group, and posts links to the ratings on its site. The system may deter groups that tend to receive low ratings from applying. Neither Help Hospitalized Veterans nor the Coalition to Salute America’s Heroes is on the military’s list.
Army Wives and Families, may we also suggest that you check out our Army Wife Talk Radio archives and resource database for the charities you are interested in supporting. You will be able to find out if they are ones that we are familiar with and many of them have been our AWTR Resource of the Week, so you should be able to hear their interviews in the archives.
Due diligence is needed whenver we are giving of our own precious resources: our family's time and money.
Ms. Schwinn compiled a great list of free resources where you can do some more research. Just click through the MSNBC link above and check out the article's Fact Box.
Thanks for all you do for military families everday!

Am I the only one who sizes up potential Army wife friends?
During my coffee time I like to hop on and browse what is up with my fellow Army wives. It is sorta like browsing the personal ads at times Oooh she looks nice, Oh she is funny, sometimes I laugh, sometimes I tear up, sometimes I can relate and sometimes I think OMG what were they thinking. So I send out a friend request or screen ones I receive.. Lately I have seen alot of negative posts (not on here) about the state of peoples marriages being unhappy, cheating, considering cheating I just sit back and think where are all the happily married people. No marriage is perfect and I think any one who says they have one should write a book because I would love to see some tips on how to have one.
When my husband got orders to Germany I started browsing as many online sites as I could find to get information on everything from what you need to do to get command sponsorship to the neighboring towns I love research. However one of the more disturbing things that I came across was postings claiming that your marriage will end in divorce if you get stationed in Germany, your husband will cheat, your husband will leave you and all the other stuff that comes with it. So as I browse through these postings of course there are comments from others saying the opposite and some where people actually agreed. Now overall the reasons that I found for the supposed unhappy marriages when you PCS to Germany are
1. the amount of time your husband is there before you get command sponsorship approval " If your husband is living in barracks as a single soldier he will be out drinking and having sex with hookers in the redlight district. supposedly all husbands do this and if you don't get concurrent travel then yep your marriage is doomed.
2. you the wife are going to be so far away from family & friends that you will nag him and he will decide to cheat on you, leave you or send you back to the states..
3. That if command sponsorship takes too long and he is enjoying single life he will tell you it is taking too long and just to stay in the USA which supposedly mean he has replaced you.
4. That you the wife will be so bored & isolated at a small post in Germany that you will want to leave
5. That there a zillion German girls looking for US Soldiers to marry them so it's really easy to get a woman..
6. That you the Army wife will cheat when he is deployed..
As a newer Army wife I find the above appalling and hopefully enough Army wives will post some positives about PCS-ing to Germany and living there that the bad stuff will be over looked. I trust my husband and I figure if I trust him here in the states why can't I trust him in another country? and if I can't have faith and trust in our marriage when we are apart for a couple months that doesn't bode well for a year or more deployment.
It is a given that in this career choice our husbands will be gone for extended periods of time, at times we will end up living in different states or even different countries but it is a life style we chose. I know people change, relationships change, our needs change. Sure the separations and distances apart can wreak havoc on even a stable committed marriage but how can we as a group fix this misconception about Germany and also the bad rep that we are getting because of other Army wives cheating? How do we fight the stereotypical lumped together category of "Army wives cheat when their husbands are away?"
I am happily married, I love my husband to distraction, he is not perfect, sometimes his jokes aren't very funny but I miss him, our daughters miss him and we are looking forward to all living together as a family again. Now I find myself being selective in forming friendships with other Army wives sizing them up I guess I figure I want to be around other wives who I can relate to. Is this normal do you screen your potential friends?

AWN Cadence Contest - TOP 3 - Congratulations!
With our Army Wife Network team registered and excited about participating in the Army Ten Miler it was suggested we give thought to a “cadence” for our team to maintain our momentum throughout the race.
We held a cadence contest and ran it through mightnight of May 31st for submissions. Admittedly, participation was slow at first. Do not despair, by the end of the contest time we were very happy to have some excellent submissions from which to pick!
The top 3 cadences, voted on by the AWN Core team, are below. Listen in on June 7th as we announce our WINNER live on the air during Army Wife Talk Radio! Congratulations to EVERYONE that participated. These were truly works of art!!!
