Kids Crafts
Ya'll, know that I'm new to this deployment stuff. As long as I've been an Army wife, I've yet to deal with it until now. So I'm preparing my first care package, and finding myself coming up blank. I bought some basics: chap stick, eye drops, cookies, pictures of the kids and I from since he left. But now I'm realizing what an empty box I still have. I don't know what to get him. I don't want to only do practical things. I'm going to scour through previous posts because I remember several on the subject of care packages (and what a bad girl I am since I went to Tara's Priceless Packages too! I need to get out my stuff from there!). But what I'm wondering about now, are crafts for my kids to make to put in the package. I need to get it in the mail tomorrow. I am going to have them make some hand turkeys, and some "snowflakes" and I was thinking that maybe a big green construction paper Christmas tree with pictures of our us all as the ornaments? But I want things for the future too...NOT holiday related, lol. Any ideas on that? My Google searches came up surprisingly bare, lol.

Of course that was a general search of stuff online. I would also think of doing holiday stuffed care packages - Thanksgiving is probably out but Christmas would work now. How about some lights, holiday flavored coffee, candy, a tree with homemade ornaments?
For the kids, ANYTHING GOES - ask them what THEY want to do. Wren loves to make those little animals out of fluffy balls, she likes to fingerpaint Daddy pictures, she made him a frame once at Midnight Star Pottery, and we all sorts of things from jewelry to calendars. For Thanksgiving we did a leaf rubbed book (take leaves and put them under paper and color over with a crayon and the leaf comes through on the paper) and then wrote "WE ARE THANKFUL..." and had all our friends and family email in something about why they were thankful for him. We added our handwritten "why" and then added it to his Thanksgiving package.
If you want "non holiday" the above links are great. Anything that they do for Daddy he is going to LOVE!!!
Hope that helps!
I always try to send TONS of snacks. Chips, candy, jerky, raisins, nuts, etc. My husband says even though he eats at the chow hall, he is always up for those snacks he misses the most. And just a tip, if you want to send bags of chips, wrap them in bubble wrap and the chips generally make it still in whole peices.
Thanks you guys! We went to Walmart and picked up some beads, construction paper, markers, little glittery things (but not glitter, lol), some feathers and stuff like that. We're going to write him letters and draw him pictures. I have pictures I took that I'm sending him. And I got him some trial mix I know he likes, some crackers, some of those "Warm Delights" cake things and such. It will be his first care package, so I want it to be great. But I know that right now, anything from home will be great to him :) Thanks again for the answers! I'll be able to use those for a long time to come :)
I am a Proud Army Mom of a Third Infantry Soldier in Iraq. I signed up so I could write this. I make Cakes in a Jar. They are cakes baked in preserving jars. They are good for a year. They taste like you just made them when the Soldiers open them. My son's buds have written me hand written notes thanking me for the cakes because they are home made. That is the highest compliment knowing they have so little time to write. There are lots of recipes for them. Do a search on Google or MSN and type in Cook Cakes in Jars and you will find lots of information. Make sure you have the right kind of jars and have read in detail how to cook in jars. It is well worth the time and effort. I even made breakfast muffins in jars and sent for those mornings when Mike did not have time to go eat at the dining hall. Hope this helps. God Bless our Soldiers. Thank you all for loving our Soldiers and keeping their homes running while they are away. You have very hard jobs and are not recognized nearly enough for your support.
I forgot to add: These make wonderful Birthday Cakes... just add some bought cake icing, candles, hats, balloons, and other birthday party stuff... and your soldier can have a home made birthday cake.
Another idea... lots of work, but also Your Soldier will LOVE IT! Get some of those fabric squares that you can print pictures on from your computer. Print some family pics, old and new ones, sew about a dozen into a quilt, design it like you want... I made mine with 36 8X10's, sewed some fabric strips to make it the size of a twin bed, backed it with Mike's favorite football team printed fleece... it is thin, but oh, so warm!!!! And your Soldier will sleep with the pics of the ones he loves.... I did it for his last deployment, I will make another one after Christmas for his Birthday. I am sure they will become hierlooms in our family. If you can tell me how to upload pics here I will send you pics to see the quilt. Mine even had a picture of Mike's Grandfather in Granada France during WWII, Mike loved that one.
